Spam

Also know as unsolicited commercial e-mail, unsolicited bulk e-mail and junk mail, Spam is any message or posting sent indiscriminately to multiple mailing lists, individuals or newsgroups.

Tips for reducing spam

  • Many Web sites require that you provide your e-mail address in order to access parts of the site, view a certain news article or sign up for a specific service. When registering on a site, you may choose to “opt out” of receiving e-mail marketing messages.
  • Make sure that you know how your e-mail will be used when registering for services on various Web sites. Read the “fine print.”
  • Consider using more than one e-mail address. Use one e-mail address only to correspond with close friends and family. Use another to sign up for online services or register for Web sites.
  • AT&T Yahoo!® Internet customers have the advantage of using an advanced spam filter built into their e-mail account, available through the AT&T Yahoo! Online Protection Suite. Customers can simply turn on the SpamGuard Plus feature and create a bulk folder to reduce spam e-mail. Learn more about using this feature.
  • If you receive spam, don’t reply to the sender or follow any removal instructions that might be included in the e-mail. Instead, complain to the sender’s Internet Service Provider (ISP). If the spam or abusive e-mail is being sent from an AT&T Yahoo! mail account, forward an unedited copy of the message to abuse@yahoo.com for review and appropriate action per AT&T Yahoo! Terms of Service.
  • AT&T customers can visit the Anti-Spam Resource Center or the Federal Trade Commission Web site for additional information on spam and how to prevent it.
  • If you continue to receive unsolicited messages from a vendor or if your “remove me” request is not honored, report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Send a copy of unwanted or deceptive messages to spam@uce.gov. The FTC uses the unsolicited e-mails stored in this database to pursue law enforcement actions against people who send deceptive spam e-mail.
